2026 First Nations Legal Cadetships (Sydney + Melbourne)
Gilbert + Tobin, a leading Australian law firm with over 500 lawyers, is offering First Nations Legal Cadetships in Sydney and Melbourne. The firm specializes in complex transactions, disputes, and regulatory matters, providing high-quality legal advice across various sectors. The cadetship program is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students by offering practical work experience alongside their studies.
Cadets typically work one to two days per week during the semester, with the possibility of additional days during semester breaks, depending on workflow. They collaborate closely with experienced lawyers, gaining exposure to different areas of legal practice and developing new skills and knowledge. The program also offers formal mentoring to support cadets throughout their studies and into their legal careers.
Applicants should identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be currently enrolled in an LLB or JD program, either part-time or full-time. They must be studying at a university in Sydney or Melbourne or be able to attend work each week at these offices. The program is open to students entering the second year of their undergraduate degree or at any stage of their JD.
Gilbert + Tobin offers a supportive and flexible work environment, with top-of-market remuneration and a range of benefits, including 26 weeks of paid parental leave, additional annual leave, subsidized café and gym memberships, end-of-trip facilities, exclusive retail discounts, and social events. The firm's offices are located in vibrant areas with easy access to public transport, restaurants, cafes, and exercise facilities. Successful applicants enrolled in undergraduate law may be eligible for Commonwealth Indigenous Cadetship Support, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.
This cadetship aims to address the under-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the legal profession and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth). Under the provisions of section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW), an exemption has been granted to Gilbert + Tobin from sections 8 and 51 of the Act for this program.
