Associate General Counsel, Frontier AI & Privacy
Thinking Machines Lab is seeking an Associate General Counsel to lead privacy strategy and provide legal counsel on advanced AI development and products. This role involves close collaboration with research, engineering, product, security, safety, and privacy teams to address legal challenges associated with building and operating advanced AI systems. The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of the company's technical infrastructure and proactively shape legal strategies for innovative products and initiatives.
Key responsibilities include advising cross-functional partners on legal issues arising from the development and release of advanced AI systems, building practical legal frameworks for AI and privacy governance, supporting research teams in AI safety and model vulnerability research, and identifying and addressing novel legal risks across various domains such as intellectual property, privacy, data rights, safety, consumer protection, and platform governance.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with significant expertise in product counseling, program development, AI regulation, and privacy. Strong client counseling skills, the ability to exercise judgment under uncertainty, and effective communication of practical, solution-focused advice are essential. Experience working directly with technical staff and familiarity with model training pipelines are also required.
Preferred qualifications include in-house experience at a technology company shipping products with novel legal risks, particularly those involving AI products, services, or academic research. Knowledge of the machine learning development lifecycle, experience with AI-powered products or privacy-implicating products, and strong familiarity with global AI regulation, data privacy, intellectual property, and regulatory issues specific to the AI domain are advantageous.
