General Matter is seeking a Compliance Attorney to join our team in Los Angeles, CA. As the first compliance-focused attorney at the company, you will collaborate with the General Counsel to design and build the legal compliance function. This role offers high autonomy and responsibility, providing the opportunity to work directly with executive leadership on sensitive regulatory, national security, and operational matters.

In this position, you will work cross-functionally to mitigate compliance risk across the organization while facilitating business objectives. Key responsibilities include advising on export-control compliance programs such as ITAR, EAR, and DOE Part 810, designing and managing classified data and industrial security practices, supporting FOCI mitigation and classified information handling requirements, developing and implementing enterprise-wide compliance policies, controls, training, and audit mechanisms, managing internal investigations, incident response, and regulatory reporting obligations, and supporting compliance aspects of strategic transactions, partnerships, and government engagements.

The ideal candidate will have a J.D. degree and at least 8 years of legal experience, including substantial experience with export controls, classification, nuclear compliance, or national security matters. Preferred qualifications include experience in the nuclear, national security, or similarly highly regulated industry, experience developing and implementing compliance policies and training programs, conducting internal investigations, and the ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business guidance.

The base salary range for this role is $150,000–$230,000 annually. Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay are determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, and internal equity.
