The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is seeking a Counsel, AI & Technology to join its Legal and Grants team (Team LeGiT). This role involves partnering with scientists, engineers, and product teams to develop cutting-edge AI tools and scientific technologies aimed at transforming our understanding and treatment of diseases. The position is based in Redwood City, CA, with a hybrid work arrangement.

The Counsel will embed with AI, product, and science teams to provide day-to-day legal support, proactively identifying and addressing legal and policy considerations throughout the development lifecycle. Key responsibilities include advising on intellectual property matters such as copyright, trademarks, open source, and licensing of AI models, datasets, and software tools, in alignment with CZI's open science principles. Additionally, the role involves providing guidance on data use and licensing issues, ensuring appropriate use of datasets for AI training while mitigating risks.

Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and be admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. A minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience is required, with a strong background in intellectual property law, particularly in the context of technology and AI. Experience advising on data privacy and security matters, as well as familiarity with open source licensing, is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
