Engineering Director - Commercial Systems
Canonical is seeking an Engineering Director to lead the Commercial Systems unit, which comprises three engineering teams responsible for developing and operating internal software products critical to the company's business operations. This role offers an opportunity to work with a globally distributed team on innovative engineering solutions that support Canonical's growth.
The Engineering Director will oversee the Billing, Contracts, and Livepatch teams. The Billing team develops a Golang service that transforms metrics into billable amounts, providing customers with real-time visibility into their spending and ensuring accurate billing. The Contracts team creates a Golang service that serves as the single source of truth for all customer contracts, offering standardized CPQ capabilities and integrating with CRM and accounting systems. The Livepatch team designs a service that delivers Linux kernel patches to minimize vulnerability windows, developing both client and backend components in Golang.
Key responsibilities include leading multiple engineering teams, developing and mentoring engineering managers, implementing performance management systems, and collaborating with stakeholders to align product development roadmaps with business objectives. The role also involves expanding the teams by hiring top talent and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high engineering standards.
Candidates should have an exceptional academic background, an undergraduate degree in a technical field, and a proven track record of leading large software engineering teams to deliver outstanding results. Experience with Golang, Python, Java, or distributed integrations is required, along with excellent communication skills and a results-oriented mindset. The ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events is also necessary.
Canonical offers a distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints, a personal learning and development budget, annual compensation reviews, recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave, an Employee Assistance Program, and opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues.
