The Head of Contracts at Liberty Mutual is responsible for leading the enterprise-wide contract management strategy, overseeing the negotiation, execution, and governance of high-impact agreements across major spend categories totaling approximately $14 billion annually. This role involves developing scalable, efficient, and risk-aware contracting operating models and serving as a key advisor and senior negotiator for the company's largest and most complex deals. The position is pivotal in accelerating innovation and AI adoption in contracting, driving the organization toward operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include leading the enterprise contract management strategy and operating model, ensuring consistent governance, compliance, and risk management. The role involves serving as the senior negotiator for high-value, complex agreements, shaping deal structures, commercial terms, and performance protections. Additionally, the Head of Contracts partners with Category Strategy, Third Party Risk, Corporate Legal, Finance, and senior business leaders to develop and execute sourcing and acquisition strategies that deliver measurable value in terms of cost, service quality, speed-to-contract, and supplier performance. Establishing and continuously improving contracting policies, standards, templates, playbooks, and negotiation best practices across the enterprise is also a critical aspect of the role.

The position requires a bachelor's degree and over 10 years of progressive experience in procurement or legal fields, with a focus on complex contract negotiation and management of products and/or services, including leading or advising on large, strategic agreements. Demonstrated success in leading teams and building scalable operating models, policies, and governance is essential. Expertise in negotiating and interpreting a broad range of agreements, such as those related to technology, marketing, HR/benefits, travel, and other indirect/direct categories, is required. Experience in developing and evolving contracting templates in partnership with legal and cross-functional risk and operational stakeholders is also necessary. Strong business acumen with the ability to evaluate financial and risk trade-offs, experience with business value analysis, and proficiency with eProcurement/Source-to-Contract platforms are important qualifications. Executive-level communication and stakeholder management skills, along with proven problem-solving, decision-making, and consensus-building capabilities in high-stakes environments, are critical for success in this role.

Preferred qualifications include an MBA or JD, Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) or equivalent certification (e.g., CPSM), experience in insurance and/or regulated financial services environments, and experience modernizing contracting operations, including workflow automation, analytics, or AI-enabled contracting initiatives.

Liberty Mutual offers a competitive salary range for this role, with a minimum of $156,000 and a maximum of $281,000 annually. The typical starting salary ranges from $187,300 to $236,000. Employees are also provided with 25 days of flexible time off annually.
