Lead Counsel, Product and IP
Scale AI is seeking a Lead Counsel for Product and Intellectual Property (IP) to join their legal team in San Francisco, CA. This role involves providing comprehensive legal guidance on product development, launch, and operations, with a focus on IP law. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in technology and a proven track record in product counseling within high-growth technology companies. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel, IP & Product.
Key responsibilities include leading IP strategy throughout the product lifecycle, collaborating with cross-functional teams to mitigate IP risks, managing Scale's global IP portfolio, advising on data licensing and open-source governance, supporting the drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements involving IP, and providing counsel on technical areas such as machine learning and robotics. Additionally, the role involves developing and delivering IP and data licensing training to enhance Scale's compliance culture.
Candidates should have over five years of experience in intellectual property law, preferably within a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department of a high-growth technology company. A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California preferred) are required. The role demands strategic thinking, risk calibration, collaboration skills, agility, and technical fluency in artificial intelligence, generative AI, and machine learning technologies.
Compensation packages at Scale for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and benefits. The base salary range for this full-time position in San Francisco is $231,000 to $288,750 USD annually. Additional benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, retirement benefits, a learning and development stipend, generous paid time off, and potentially a commuter stipend.
