Legal AI Engineer (Contractor)
Gusto is seeking a Legal AI Engineer for a fixed-term engagement to develop foundational AI infrastructure for its legal team. This role involves designing and implementing systems that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of legal operations, ensuring they are well-documented and maintainable for future internal use. The Legal AI Engineer will be responsible for integrating existing AI tools into cohesive, shared assets accessible to the entire legal team. Key tasks include connecting current AI tooling, building a structured legal repository, and implementing AI-assisted workflows for high-volume legal use cases such as contract reviews and litigation operations. Additionally, the engineer will document all systems and provide training to designated team members to ensure seamless handoff and ongoing maintenance.
Candidates should have hands-on experience in building and deploying AI-assisted workflows, with proficiency in working with large language models like Claude. Essential skills include prompt engineering, developing agentic workflows, and iterating outputs for reliability. Experience in integrating tools using APIs or similar methods, and the ability to translate business problems into functional systems, are also required. Familiarity with internal technology governance processes and effective communication with IT or AI teams are important for success in this role.
This contractor position is available in a hybrid format in San Francisco, CA; Denver, CO; New York, NY; or remotely within the United States.
