Legal Director, Civil Rights and Special Projects
The Legal Director, Civil Rights and Special Projects, will lead Democracy Forward's civil rights initiatives, reporting directly to the President and CEO. This role involves developing strategic visions and staffing plans to maximize the impact of civil rights projects, as well as overseeing significant affirmative litigation involving state and institutional actors.
Key responsibilities include identifying, developing, and supervising high-impact civil rights-related matters, ensuring all legal work meets the highest standards of excellence. The Legal Director will collaborate closely with civil rights organizations and the broader pro-democracy community to coordinate litigation and develop long-term legal doctrines. Additionally, the role involves engaging with all divisions of the organization to facilitate collaboration and fostering a culture of inclusion and continuous learning within the Legal Department.
Candidates must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in the bar of the District of Columbia or another state with the ability to become admitted in D.C. A minimum of 15 years of active litigation experience, including significant experience in developing civil rights and affirmative litigation, is required. The role also demands at least 10 years of experience in managing and leading diverse teams, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with legal, academic, government, and nonprofit networks.
