Principal Embedded Software Engineer
Formlabs is seeking a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead our Embedded team in developing cutting-edge 3D printing technology. This team is crucial in integrating software, hardware, and electronics to push the boundaries of 3D printing capabilities. As a Principal Engineer, you will define technical roadmaps and address complex, department-level challenges.
In this role, you will identify and lead large-scale projects that align with Formlabs' business objectives. Responsibilities include driving the technical strategy and long-term roadmap for our firmware and embedded software platforms, focusing on a 6 to 12+ month horizon. You will champion new technologies, assess risks, and implement both incremental improvements and groundbreaking innovations. Collaboration with electrical and mechanical teams is essential to guide hardware selection and system design from a software perspective. Additionally, you will partner with product managers and designers to define the product roadmap, ensuring technical feasibility and scalability.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of shipping code for complex hardware products in the consumer, medical, defense, or industrial sectors. Expertise in modern embedded software stacks, particularly C or C++, is required. You should be adept at translating high-level vision into concrete software features and products, architecting systems for long-term scalability and maintainability. Experience in debugging complex hardware and software interactions across multiple subsystems is essential. As a technical bridge and advisor, you will translate business goals into technical requirements and influence cross-functional partners' roadmaps. Mentoring and growing the engineering team by attracting talent and maintaining high standards of excellence is also a key aspect of this role.
Compensation for this position includes an annual base salary ranging from $175,000 to $200,000 USD, depending on skills, qualifications, experience, location, and expected impact on the organization.
