The Principal Investigator for Undersea Systems at STR will lead innovative research and development in advanced undersea sensing and robotic technologies. This role involves setting the technical vision and guiding multidisciplinary teams in the creation of next-generation Counter-Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (C-UUV) systems, acoustic sensing, signal processing, and noise control. The position requires direct engagement with U.S. Government and industry partners to define new capabilities and deliver operationally relevant solutions.

Key responsibilities include defining and leading a research agenda in advanced undersea sensing and robotics, architecting system-level solutions for uncrewed undersea vehicles, sensor payloads, and command-and-control systems, and providing technical direction to engineering teams. The role also involves generating new concepts and technology approaches to address emerging undersea mission needs, leading the development of proposals and briefings, and serving as the primary technical interface to customers. Additionally, the Principal Investigator will translate concepts into executable technical plans, lead technical teams through design and implementation phases, and mentor early-career engineers and researchers.

Candidates should possess an active security clearance with special access eligibility, an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Acoustics, Robotics, or a closely related field, and substantial experience (typically 5-12+ years depending on degree) in undersea systems, sensing, or robotics. Experience as a technical lead on complex programs, with a proven track record of successful execution, is essential. The role requires expertise in areas such as advanced acoustic sensing systems, C-UUV detection and tracking, noise control, and embedded and real-time processing architectures.
