Product Counsel, Payroll and Fintech

Gusto is seeking a Product Counsel to join its growing Product Commercial Legal team, focusing on payroll, fintech, and tax products. This role offers an opportunity to shape the future of Gusto's product legal function by integrating AI-driven tools and innovative processes. The position is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model.

In this role, the Product Counsel will provide comprehensive legal support for product development, reviews, and updates, collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders. Responsibilities include navigating complex regulatory frameworks, advising on payroll and fintech products, and developing scalable processes to manage legal risks. The role also involves leading the adoption of AI-driven review tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Candidates should have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and be an active member of a State bar. A minimum of 7 years of combined legal experience, including in-house experience at a technology company, is required. Expertise in supporting the development of payroll, fintech, tax, and payment products, along with experience in managing highly regulated domestic and global products, is essential. Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work collaboratively to help business clients understand and manage risk-based decisions are also important.

Gusto offers competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) to all full-time employees. Compensation for this role is targeted at $185,000 to $231,000 per year for San Francisco & New York locations. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise.
