The RD Technical Lead – 3D Printers at Formlabs is a pivotal role within the Hardware Engineering department, based in Somerville, MA. Formlabs is a leading innovator in 3D printing technology, empowering over 50,000 industry leaders, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA, to design, prototype, and manufacture with unprecedented speed and precision. As a technical lead, you will be instrumental in driving the overall design and performance of cutting-edge 3D printing products.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Product Team to define ambitious yet achievable product performance goals grounded in sound engineering principles. You will lead architectural decisions across various engineering domains—mechanical, optical, electrical, and more—identifying technological risks and developing robust system architectures. Your responsibilities will also include defining subsystem requirements, guiding team members through technical implementations, and ensuring the final product meets high-performance standards.

The ideal candidate has led the technical development of complex electro-mechanical products and possesses a broad understanding of technologies such as mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, material science, motion control, and embedded code. Demonstrated success across the entire product lifecycle, from concept development to high-volume manufacturing, is essential. Strong analytical skills, the ability to defend design decisions with objective data, and effective collaboration with all levels of management are also key qualifications.

Formlabs offers a comprehensive compensation package, including a robust equity program through RSUs, comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision), 401K matching with access to financial advisors, generous paid parental leave (up to 16 weeks), tenure-based paid sabbatical leave (up to 6 weeks), and a flexible out-of-office plan. Additional perks include ample on-site parking, pre-tax commuter benefits, healthy on-site meals and snacks, regular professional development opportunities, diverse community events, and unlimited 3D prints.

Joining Formlabs means becoming part of a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators dedicated to reinventing how the world creates physical things. The company fosters a culture of healthy debate, high standards for engineering work, and continuous learning. If you're ready to shape the future of fabrication and contribute to a dynamic, inclusive community, Formlabs offers an environment where your impact will be significant and rewarding.
