Research Scientist, Prediction & Planning

Waymo is seeking a Research Scientist to join its Predictive Planning team, which focuses on developing machine learning solutions that predict future states and plan the behavior of the Waymo Driver. This role involves designing and implementing generative models to enhance autonomous vehicle planning and prediction capabilities. The position is available in Mountain View, CA; San Francisco, CA; and New York City, NY.

Key responsibilities include developing next-generation machine learning-powered systems to improve the performance of the Waymo Driver and support business scaling. The role requires translating real-world driving challenges into well-defined machine learning problems, applying techniques such as foundation models and reinforcement learning. The scientist will write high-quality, scalable code to integrate research into production and collaborate with researchers, engineers, and product managers to deliver safe and smooth planning behaviors.

Candidates must have a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. A proven track record of publications in top-tier conferences and demonstrated impact on the machine learning community through influential research or significant industry contributions are required. Proficiency in modern deep learning frameworks like JAX or PyTorch, strong programming skills in Python and/or C++, and excellent analytical and debugging abilities are essential.

Preferred qualifications include specialized research experience in deep learning, reinforcement learning, causal reasoning, or foundation models. Prior industry experience in applied machine learning research or software development, domain expertise in motion planning or related robotics problems, and hands-on experience deploying and maintaining machine learning systems in production environments are advantageous.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position is $175,000 to $215,000 annually, depending on factors such as location, experience, and education. Waymo employees are also eligible for discretionary annual bonuses, equity incentive plans, and a comprehensive benefits program.
