Waymo, an autonomous driving technology company, is seeking a Risk Management Engineer to join its Safety team in Mountain View or San Francisco, California. The team is dedicated to promoting and continuously improving the safety of Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology. This role involves leading and executing end-to-end risk management processes, including issue intake, review, escalation, management, and retirement for risks across the autonomous system.

Key responsibilities include defining and managing the program that governs risk management and escalation, driving the discovery and retirement of issues across teams, product lifecycle, and risk categories, and overseeing and optimizing the program to ensure compliance with international standards such as ISO 31000. The Risk Management Engineer will also serve as a core safety expert in risk assessments and technical discussions, ensuring assessments are accurate and escalations are appropriate, and champion and promote a robust safety culture and the continuous improvement of the Waymo safety program across the engineering organization.

Candidates should possess a Master's degree or higher in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or a related technical field, with at least 10 years of safety engineering experience specializing in the end-to-end lifecycle of risk, including identification, assessment, mitigation, and acceptance of risk, ideally following ISO 31000. A comprehensive understanding of safety-critical system design, systems engineering, and the Verification and Validation process is essential. Strong backgrounds in quantitative risk and data analysis, with expertise in leveraging qualitative risk assessments based on expert judgment, are required. Demonstrated technical project management skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple parallel, cross-functional safety-critical projects and teams are also necessary.

Preferred qualifications include expertise in delivering successful ASIL D certified products to market, including full safety case ownership from concept to production, extensive experience leading and performing complex safety analyses (HARA, FMEA, FTA, etc.) for autonomous or highly complex E/E systems, and extensive knowledge of advanced safety standards beyond ISO 26262 that can be applied to AI components within autonomous systems (such as ISO 21448, SOTIF), as well as relevant quality/reliability standards and international regulatory requirements. Success as a safety culture champion, influencing and promoting safety practices across engineering teams, is also preferred.

While specific compensation details are not provided, Waymo offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid time off, and other perks. The company fosters a culture of innovation and safety, providing opportunities for professional growth and development within the rapidly evolving field of autonomous driving technology.

Joining Waymo's Safety team offers the chance to be at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, contributing to the development of safe and reliable self-driving systems. The role provides opportunities to work on complex safety analyses, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and influence the safety culture within the organization. Candidates passionate about safety engineering and autonomous systems are encouraged to apply.
