Senior AI Engineer
Workstream is a mission-driven company building the all-in-one HR, payroll, and hiring platform for managing the hourly workforce. There are 2.7 billion hourly workers, making up 80% of the global workforce, but this market has been heavily underserved by technology and deserves better. Workstream has been purpose-built for the hourly workforce from day one so that these businesses and their employees can thrive.
Our customers include leading brands from multiple sectors, including Burger King, Carl's Jr./Hardee's, IHOP, KFC, and Culvers. We are a high growth series B company and quickly expanding our product portfolio to deliver on our vision. We are backed by legendary VCs and industry experts like Founders Fund, BOND, and Coatue.
As a Senior AI Engineer at Workstream, you will be a founding member of our AI-Native Services (AINS) team, responsible for developing and operating production agents and agentic workflows. Your role will involve building and managing AI agents, orchestrating tool use, establishing data connections, and implementing deterministic logic, state management, and permissions. You will work closely with design customers to map their workflows, build against live data, and ensure the seamless integration of AI solutions into their operations.
Key responsibilities include constructing evaluation harnesses with real customer data, developing human-review layers with exception queues and review tooling, conducting parallel runs against existing processes to drive discrepancies to zero before go-live, and transforming customer-specific work into reusable agents, integrations, and playbooks. You will also handle production incidents end-to-end, feeding every failure back into evaluations and controls to prevent recurrence, and help set the technical bar as the team grows.
To be successful in this role, you should have personally built and operated at least one AI agent or agentic workflow in production, with a clear understanding of its operation, evaluation, and areas of failure. Strong engineering judgment across models, orchestration, APIs, data integrations, permissions, observability, and evaluations is essential. Experience working directly with customers or end-users in discovery, implementation, or incident resolution, and the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders, are crucial. A demonstrated ability to break down complex workflows into deterministic steps, agentic decisions, human judgment, and exception paths, and define testing strategies for each component, is required. Exposure to regulated domains such as payroll, payments, tax, benefits, or labor compliance is a plus, but not mandatory.
This is a full-time, remote position with occasional in-office visits as needed to support close cross-functional collaboration and key team initiatives.
