Senior Attorney
The Senior Attorney at Freedom Together Foundation will provide legal counsel and conduct research to support two of the Foundation's program areas. This role involves reviewing grant agreements, advising program staff on strategic initiatives, anticipating legal issues, and managing relationships with outside counsel. The Senior Attorney will play a critical role in assessing and mitigating risks associated with the Foundation's activities.
Key responsibilities include partnering closely with program staff to provide legal guidance on grantmaking activities, conducting research on applicable laws and regulations, reviewing grantee documents to ensure compliance, participating in program team meetings to understand portfolio needs, and developing practical policies and procedures. Additionally, the Senior Attorney will collaborate with the Senior Vice President & General Counsel and other departments to support the Foundation's mission.
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and have a minimum of five years of legal experience, preferably in government, nonprofits, foundations, or law firms specializing in nonprofit issues, compliance, or civil and human rights. Admission to practice law in New York State is required. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of nonprofit advocacy, experience in adapting complex legal advice into practical processes, excellent attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
The position offers a competitive salary range of $220,000 to $240,000 annually. Benefits include 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums for employees and their families, generous paid time off including the last week of the year, a 12% employer contribution to a 401(k) retirement plan, up to $5,000 annually for professional development, and the opportunity to recommend an annual grant to a nonprofit of choice.
