Senior Backend Engineer - (Java) - Teams & Education

Canva is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Teams and Education (T&E) SuperGroup, which focuses on products like Canva Pro, Canva for Enterprise, Canva for Nonprofits, and Canva for Education. These products serve millions of customers worldwide and are pivotal to Canva's revenue. The T&E SuperGroup comprises 15 teams and nearly 200 members dedicated to enhancing user experiences and driving growth.

In this role, you will lead the development of sharing and permissions features across Canva's platform, including the design experience, content management, and brand components. Responsibilities include proposing innovative solutions to future-proof product decision platforms, authoring design documents, conducting design meetings, and advocating for best practices to improve service performance and resilience. You will also design and implement complex system aspects, guide major project implementations, and mentor other engineers.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in developing distributed web applications with a deep understanding of Java. A proven track record in planning and executing complex architectural changes is essential, along with excellent communication and collaboration skills. Experience in mentoring engineering teams, strong fundamentals in computer science and engineering, and hands-on experience with large distributed cloud environments (preferably AWS) are required. Familiarity with cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes and Terraform is also desirable.
