The New York Times is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Counsel to join its legal team, reporting to the Vice President and Chief Data Officer. This role is pivotal in supporting the company's business and operations, focusing on consumer protection, data privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance across its diverse digital products and platforms.

Key responsibilities include advising senior leadership and various teams on the development, collection, use, transfer, governance, and protection of sensitive data from both domestic and international perspectives. The Senior Counsel will oversee risk and data protection impact assessments, collaborate with engineering on privacy and advertising technology, and participate in incident response matters. Additionally, the role involves developing and implementing compliance policies, managing privacy policies and terms of use, reviewing and negotiating data provisions in commercial agreements, and providing legal advice on consumer protection laws and product development.

Candidates must possess an undergraduate and J.D. degree from recognized institutions and be a member of the New York bar. A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience is required, encompassing areas such as cybersecurity, data privacy and protection, subscription compliance, marketing laws, and accessibility. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to journalistic independence and the mission of The New York Times to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

This is a hybrid role based at the company's headquarters in New York, NY, with an expectation of three days in-office per week. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with various teams, including News, Games, The Athletic, Wirecutter, Cooking, Growth, Marketing, Product Engineering, Data Platform, App Platforms, New AI Products and Platforms, Cybersecurity, Human Resources, and Strategic Sourcing.
