Senior Counsel - IP Strategy
AbbVie is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its Intellectual Property Strategy group within the Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team. This role focuses on developing and implementing intellectual property strategies for AbbVie's pharmaceutical products and product candidates. The position is based in one of AbbVie's offices located in North Chicago, IL; South San Francisco, CA; Irvine, CA; or Waltham, MA, with a hybrid work model requiring on-site presence at least three days per week.
The Senior Counsel will be responsible for generating and executing intellectual property strategies across various therapeutic areas and technologies, including both large and small molecules. Key duties include drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications worldwide, collaborating directly with scientists to create novel intellectual property that enhances AbbVie's competitive position, providing legal advice to cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP-related matters, and managing patent challenges and defenses in post-grant proceedings such as inter partes reviews and oppositions.
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to a state bar enabling in-house practice, and have registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). A minimum of five years of experience in patent law, including substantial U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, is required. A technical background relevant to pharmaceutical patent prosecution, such as experience in small molecule or biological pharmaceutical discovery and development, or a technical degree in fields like molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering, is essential. Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and project management skills are also necessary.
AbbVie offers a comprehensive compensation package, including a base salary ranging from $160,500 to $305,000 annually, depending on experience and location.
