Senior Counsel - IP Strategy
AbbVie is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its Intellectual Property Strategy group within the Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team. This role focuses on supporting AbbVie's pharmaceutical products and product candidates, with opportunities available in North Chicago, IL; South San Francisco, CA; Irvine, CA; or Waltham, MA. The position follows a hybrid work model, requiring on-site presence three or more days per week.
The Senior Counsel will be responsible for developing and implementing intellectual property strategies across various therapeutic areas and technologies, including both large and small molecules. Key duties include partnering with the IP Prosecution team to draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide, collaborating directly with scientists to generate novel intellectual property, providing legal counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP-related matters, and managing post-grant proceedings such as IPRs, oppositions, and interferences.
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to a state bar enabling in-house practice, and have registration to practice before the USPTO. A minimum of five years of experience in patent law, including substantial U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, is required. A technical background relevant to pharmaceutical patent prosecution, such as experience with small molecule or biological pharmaceutical discovery and development, or a degree in fields like molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering, is essential. Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and project management skills are also necessary.
AbbVie offers a competitive compensation package, with a salary range between $160,500 and $305,000 annually.
