Senior Legal Counsel
New Relic, a leading observability platform, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its global legal team in Tokyo, Japan. This role focuses on supporting commercial activities across the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) regions, with a particular emphasis on Japan. The ideal candidate will be a Japanese-qualified attorney with 5-7 years of post-qualification experience, including time in an English-speaking jurisdiction.
In this position, the Senior Legal Counsel will draft, review, and negotiate Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) contracts and other commercial agreements to support New Relic's go-to-market efforts. They will provide guidance to sales teams on deal structures, contract negotiations, and customer contract disputes. Additionally, the role involves analyzing and advising internal stakeholders and leadership teams on risks associated with contracts in the APJ region, particularly concerning commercial, partner, and privacy commitments.
The successful candidate will also act as a central point of contact for new and updated agreement templates, including master agreements, amendments, and data processing agreements, with primary responsibility for all Japanese form agreements. They will collaborate with Contract Managers and the Deal Desk to drive the execution of agreements and order forms, serving as a point of escalation and source of mentorship for decisions requiring counsel authority. Partnering with the Privacy Legal team, they will drive understanding, risk tolerance, and standardization of responses concerning global privacy regulatory regimes, particularly in Japan.
Fluency in both Japanese and English is essential, with high-level written English skills to facilitate strong communications and negotiations. Proficiency in negotiating topics such as artificial intelligence, privacy, security, and data protection within the commercial contract context is also required. A strategic, hands-on approach to supporting the execution of SaaS agreements and a deep understanding of New Relic's SaaS and business models are crucial.
