Senior Machine Learning Engineer , Optimisation (Gurobi)
The Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Optimisation (Gurobi) role at PlayStation Global focuses on enhancing the PlayStation experience for millions of users and game studios. The position is part of the Machine Learning team within the Digital Technology and Information Services (DTIS) organization, dedicated to developing advanced decision systems that drive pricing, promotion planning, and large-scale commercial strategies across the PlayStation ecosystem. These systems deliver impactful recommendations to studios and have strong leadership support.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing large-scale optimization models using industry-standard solvers like Gurobi. The engineer will build decision systems that incorporate predictive signals from machine learning models, operate under multiple operational and business constraints, and automatically balance trade-offs across competing objectives. Additionally, the role involves improving existing workflows to maximize the core usage of the Gurobi solver and reduce job runtime. Collaboration with ML engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders is essential to integrate predictive models into downstream systems. The engineer will also conduct scenario analysis and uplift forecasts to support strategic planning, mentor junior machine learning engineers, and influence technology strategy and product roadmap through an operations research and machine learning lens.
Candidates should possess an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or Data Science, specializing in optimization problems. Strong hands-on experience with Gurobi or OR-Tools is required, along with industry experience in building, deploying, and owning optimization systems in production. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and Java, with experience integrating optimization solvers into cloud-based backend systems, is essential. Excellent communication skills are necessary to bridge technical solutions with business objectives and convey complex concepts to stakeholders with limited knowledge of operations research or machine learning. Experience working with outputs from machine learning models and incorporating them into downstream decision-making pipelines is also important. Candidates should demonstrate resilience and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate through fast-changing conditions to achieve results.
Preferred qualifications include experience in promotion calendar optimization using Gurobi, large-scale structured data manipulation and processing using tools like Databricks, PySpark, and Snowflake, and running online A/B testing for predictive models. Experience working with custom machine learning platforms for continuous integration, deployment, and monitoring of machine learning models is advantageous. Familiarity with the gaming industry and experience working with cross-timezone teams are also beneficial.
