Senior ML Research Engineer – AI & Generative Recommendation (m/f/d)
Applike is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Research Engineer to join their Data Science Research team in Berlin. This role focuses on developing AI-driven recommendation systems that serve millions of users globally. Applike, backed by a $100 million investment from Bertelsmann, operates in the mobile advertising sector, connecting app developers to over 770 million users worldwide.
The successful candidate will lead the design and implementation of AI-native recommendation pipelines, including generative retrieval, deep ranking, and re-ranking systems. Responsibilities encompass translating state-of-the-art research into production-ready code optimized for sub-millisecond latency, advancing content understanding through information-rich embeddings, and ensuring the scalability of large-scale generative models in high-concurrency environments. Additionally, the role involves mentoring junior scientists and fostering a collaborative team environment.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Physics, or a Master's degree with extensive industry research experience. A strong publication record in top-tier venues such as SIGIR, KDD, NeurIPS, or ICLR is required. Candidates must have over four years of professional experience building large-scale recommendation systems in high-throughput industries like AdTech, E-commerce, or Social Media. Proficiency in PyTorch, high-concurrency optimization, model quantization, and distillation is essential. The role demands an independent, problem-solving mindset capable of addressing unsolved challenges with direct business impact.
