Senior Software Engineer, Backend — Frontier Data

The Senior Software Engineer, Backend role at Scale AI's Frontier Data team focuses on developing and maintaining backend systems that support advanced AI applications, including coding agents, tool use, and GUI automation. This position is integral to transforming complex challenges into scalable platforms and pipelines that deliver high-quality outcomes.

Key responsibilities include owning major backend systems for frontier agentic data products, building scalable services and pipelines to support agent workflows, and architecting modular, reusable backend systems that adapt to evolving product needs. The role also involves operating in high-ambiguity environments, partnering cross-functionally with product, research/ML, and infrastructure teams, and improving system performance through thoughtful architecture and iterative optimization.

Candidates should have over 5 years of full-time software engineering experience, with strong backend engineering fundamentals in distributed systems, API design, data modeling, and production reliability. Proficiency with Docker and containerized development environments, experience building scalable systems, and comfort working close to AI/ML systems are also required. Proficiency with SQL and modern database-backed application development is essential.

The compensation package includes a base salary ranging from $216,200 to $270,250 USD, along with equity and comprehensive benefits such as health, dental, and vision coverage, retirement benefits, a learning and development stipend, generous PTO, and potentially a commuter stipend.
