Senior Software Engineer - Product & Features (Java) - Open to remote across ANZ
Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Java to join our Product & Features team. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely across Australia and New Zealand, aligning with our mission to redefine how the world experiences design. As part of our dynamic engineering team, you'll collaborate with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to develop scalable backend services that power innovative design tools for millions of users worldwide.
In this position, you will lead the design and development of reliable backend services using modern frameworks and tools. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include driving collaboration with cross-functional teams to scope and deliver impactful product features, evolving Canva’s backend architecture through thoughtful service design and system decomposition, and championing reliability, performance, and engineering best practices across multiple service domains. Additionally, you'll write robust, well-tested code, proactively identify areas for technical improvement, guide design and code reviews, mentor peers, and maintain service health and observability.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience building complex backend systems in production environments, with strong Java fundamentals and the ability to write production-grade code. You should be comfortable taking ownership of features end-to-end, from architecture to delivery, and thrive in environments where you drive the "how." A balance of attention to detail with pragmatism is essential, along with a thoughtful approach to collaboration across disciplines. Experience using AI tools in coding and programming to drive greater impact is also highly valued.
