Software Engineer, Finance Applications

Block is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Financial Platform Engineering team within its platform engineering organization. This team is responsible for developing and maintaining the foundational financial technology infrastructure that supports all of Block's brands, including Square and Cash App. The role involves designing and building backend services, integrations, and workflow engines to ensure the smooth operation of financial processes across the company.

In this position, the Software Engineer will focus on transforming complex financial requirements into scalable technology solutions, with a particular emphasis on AI enablement. Key responsibilities include building financial operations and reporting infrastructure, leading platform migrations, designing workflow and automation systems, and owning integrations end-to-end. Collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Accounting, FP&A, Tax, Procurement, Product, TPMs, Engineering, and Data teams is essential to ensure compliance and data integrity across multiple jurisdictions.

Candidates should have at least six years of experience working on complex systems and delivering quality software, with expertise in distributed systems design, workflow or state machine systems, and building and maintaining APIs and integrations. An AI-first mentality and familiarity with agentic engineering are highly valued. Experience working on financially sensitive or regulated systems, with a strong understanding of idempotency, audit trails, data retention, and access controls, is also required.
