Spring Legal Student Internship – Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
Colorado Legal Services (CLS) is seeking a Spring Legal Student Intern for its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). CLS is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and seniors across Colorado. The LITC offers free legal representation to low to moderate-income individuals in tax disputes, education and outreach to taxpayers who have low to moderate income or speak English as a second language, and advocacy regarding systemic issues within the IRS.
As a Spring Legal Student Intern, you will assist the LITC team in representing clients before the IRS and in U.S. Tax Court on audits, appeals, tax collection matters, and other tax disputes. Your responsibilities will include conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, assisting with client intake, and participating in outreach and education efforts to inform low-income taxpayers about their rights and available resources. This role offers valuable hands-on experience in tax law and public service.
Ideal candidates should be law students with a strong interest in tax law and public service. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills are essential. Prior experience in tax law or working with low-income communities is preferred but not required. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate a commitment to CLS's mission of providing compassionate legal assistance to those in need.
Compensation details for this internship are not specified in the available information. However, CLS is known for offering meaningful opportunities for professional development and community engagement. Interns gain practical experience in tax law and public service, contributing to the organization's mission of assisting low-income Coloradans.
CLS fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment, emphasizing the importance of diversity and community engagement. Interns have the opportunity to work alongside experienced attorneys and staff, gaining exposure to various aspects of civil legal assistance. This internship provides a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of low-income individuals and to develop skills that are valuable in both public and private sectors.
