Staff Software Engineer - API Platform (Remote across ANZ)
Canva is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its API Platform team, which is integral to scaling the company's backend services to support billions of users. This role involves defining the technical roadmap and architecture for API platforms, ensuring the reliability and scalability of Canva's backend systems. The API Platform team focuses on providing tools and libraries that empower engineers to build and maintain robust services.
Key responsibilities include leading the definition of the technical roadmap and architecture for API platforms, designing and implementing complex system components, and guiding major projects with realistic task breakdowns. The role also involves proposing innovative solutions to future-proof Canva's distributed cloud infrastructure and providing mentorship to other engineers.
The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of experience developing distributed web applications on the JVM, with proficiency in Java and other backend languages such as Scala, Python, or TypeScript. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, along with expertise in asynchronous or reactive programming techniques and a deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, data structures, and distributed systems. Experience with large distributed cloud environments, preferably AWS, and familiarity with RPC frameworks like gRPC and modern networking protocols such as HTTP/2, protobuf, and WebSockets are highly regarded.
