Benesch is seeking a highly motivated Senior Structural Project Engineer to join our Cary, NC office. This role offers a unique opportunity for a licensed Professional Engineer with a strong foundation in bridge design to assume leadership responsibilities, mentor staff, drive technical excellence, and contribute to the growth of our structural engineering practice.

The Senior Structural Project Engineer will lead structural design efforts for bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and other transportation structures for Department of Transportation and municipal clients. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing structural and geometrical calculations, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports for bridge and transportation projects. The role also involves providing technical oversight, quality control, and complex modeling and analysis for project elements, as well as collaborating with other disciplines to coordinate project development. Additionally, the engineer will check and sign off on design calculations, quantities, and plan elements, lead or assist with bridge inspection field efforts, mentor junior staff, and support business development through proposal writing, client outreach, and industry networking.

Candidates must possess a B.S. or M.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering and hold a PE License in North Carolina, with SE preferred or the ability to obtain. A minimum of 8 years of structural design experience is required, including a proven track record with DOT and public sector clients. Proficiency with NCDOT standards, Bentley CAD, and design software is essential, with experience in the NCDOT WIGINS program considered a plus. Strong understanding of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and DOT requirements, excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills, and the ability to manage design budgets, schedules, and deliverables are also necessary. An entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in shaping and growing a structural practice is highly valued.
