AmeriCorps Legal Assistant - Rochester, NY (6 month term)
The AmeriCorps Legal Assistant position is a six-month term role based in Rochester, NY, offered by Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. (LawNY®). This position is part of the Access to Justice Project, a collaboration between LawNY® and AmeriCorps aimed at expanding legal assistance to low-income individuals. LawNY® is a non-profit law firm dedicated to providing free civil legal services to clients across western New York.
In this role, the Legal Assistant will conduct intake and screening for income-eligible individuals seeking civil legal assistance. Responsibilities include recruiting and supporting volunteer lawyers, students, and community members, as well as assisting staff attorneys in delivering legal services. The position also involves collaborating with community agencies serving low-income populations to strengthen partnerships and providing outreach and community education to targeted groups.
Candidates should have at least two years of college education or equivalent experience. Prior experience working with low-income individuals is preferred but not required. Applicants must reside within a commutable distance to the Rochester office.
The position offers a living allowance of $2,000 per month for the duration of the six-month contract. Additional benefits may include assistance in obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, an educational award, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans.
