Commercial Counsel, GTM
Canva Pty Ltd., an Australian multinational software company founded in 2013, is seeking a Commercial Counsel to join its Go-To-Market (GTM) team. The company, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, has expanded its operations to include offices in San Francisco and Austin, offering flexibility in work arrangements. The GTM team is integral to Canva's mission of empowering the world to design, focusing on scaling the Enterprise and Public Sector business.
As a Commercial Counsel embedded within the GTM team, the primary responsibilities include reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a high volume of commercial agreements with customers, vendors, and partners. The role also involves supporting and evolving Canva's contracting approach for government and public sector clients, navigating procurement requirements, regulatory obligations, and government-specific contracting frameworks. Additional duties encompass supporting partner-led and channel transactions, responding promptly to legal inquiries from stakeholders across Sales, Finance, and other teams, and staying current on relevant laws and regulations affecting enterprise and government contracts.
Candidates should possess hands-on experience in reviewing and negotiating various contracts within a fast-paced technology company, including government and public sector SaaS transactions. A proactive approach to identifying and analyzing business opportunities and risks is essential, along with the ability to deliver timely, practical advice tailored to risk, deal structure, and internal policy. Excellent communication skills are required to simplify complex legal concepts for non-legal stakeholders. The role demands comfort in participating in cross-functional and internationally distributed teams, a collaborative team player attitude, and an openness to embracing AI tools and workflows to enhance legal work efficiency.
While specific compensation details are not provided, Canva offers a flexible working environment with options to work from the Sydney, San Francisco, or Austin offices, or remotely. The company emphasizes a values-driven culture that fosters innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. Employees are encouraged to contribute to the development of contract templates, playbooks, and other legal resources, and to participate in designing and delivering training to equip GTM and cross-functional stakeholders. Canva's commitment to a goal-driven culture is evident in its recognition as the number one Best Workplace for Innovators by Fast Company in 2023.
Joining Canva provides an opportunity to be part of a dynamic and rapidly growing company that values creativity, inclusivity, and continuous learning. The role offers exposure to a diverse range of legal challenges within the technology sector, with the chance to make a significant impact on Canva's mission to empower the world to design. The company's culture encourages employees to be their authentic selves, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and included.
