Data Science Intern
As a Data Science Intern at Upstart, you will join the Machine Learning team, which is central to the company's mission of reducing the cost and complexity of borrowing for Americans. Upstart is a leading AI lending marketplace that partners with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through advanced technology. The Machine Learning team comprises research scientists, data scientists, and machine learning engineers who develop and enhance production models across various domains, including underwriting, pricing, fraud detection, performance marketing, loan servicing, and fair lending.
In this role, you will leverage your technical and business acumen to become an expert in Upstart's models, products, and business operations. Your primary responsibilities will include identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement, conducting self-directed investigations into Upstart's data and products, performing offline analyses using statistical methods and clean code, and presenting your findings to the Machine Learning team. You will receive mentorship from experienced data science and machine learning practitioners and collaborate closely with machine learning scientists to improve Upstart's products and models through data-driven insights.
To be considered for this position, you should be pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or a related quantitative field, with an expected graduation by the summer of 2027. Strong fundamentals in statistical, probability, and machine learning theory are essential, along with proficiency in Python for data analysis and basic SQL knowledge. Effective communication skills, intellectual curiosity, humility, drive, and teamwork are also important. Familiarity with modern agentic tooling, such as Claude Code or Codex, is advantageous.
