Effects Tool Engineer

The team develops intuitive, powerful tools and rendering infrastructure that enable seamless transformation of ideas into impactful content. The Effects Tool Engineer role is central to driving innovation in Canva's intelligent video editing experiences.
In this position, the engineer will build intuitive and expressive effect editing tools for end users, akin to platforms like TikTok's Effect House. Responsibilities include designing real-time editing and preview experiences for visual effects, developing effect modules such as shaders, transitions, and animation templates, and collaborating with designers and creators to refine interaction patterns and workflows. Ensuring performance and compatibility across web, mobile, and desktop platforms, as well as maintaining code quality and scalable architecture in a fast-paced product environment, are also key aspects of the role.
The ideal candidate should be proficient in JavaScript or TypeScript, with experience in large-scale frontend applications. They should have a background in building visual editors, design tools, or interactive UI/UX tooling, and be familiar with performance profiling and optimization for rendering-intensive applications. Strong product thinking and empathy for end-user workflows, especially for creative users, are essential. Experience with 3D engine editors such as Three.js, Babylon.js, Unity, or Unreal Engine is also desirable.
