Legal Advocates
The Legal Advocate position at Jersey Battered Women's Service, Inc. (JBWS) is a part-time role requiring 14 hours per week. JBWS is a private, nonprofit agency dedicated to providing safety, support, and solutions for individuals facing intimate partner abuse, regardless of severity, marital status, income, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity. The organization's mission centers on creating a community-wide culture that refuses to tolerate any form of intimate partner violence, emphasizing empowerment and advocacy for social reform.
In this role, the Legal Advocate will assist individuals experiencing domestic violence by providing legal information related to the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA) and related statutes. Responsibilities include helping survivors file complaints, attending court proceedings with them, offering advocacy tailored to individual needs, and assisting clients in making informed decisions. The position also involves planning and implementing educational legal information sessions, documenting client statistics, maintaining a professional demeanor in court, and contributing to a positive team environment.
Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field, or have equivalent work experience, with a minimum of three years providing case management services. Fluency in both English and Spanish, including verbal, written, and reading skills, is preferred. The role requires excellent organizational, documentation, and interpersonal skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and cultural awareness, particularly regarding challenges faced by marginalized populations. While 40-hour domestic violence training is preferred, candidates without this training must complete it upon hire, with the agency providing and paying for the training.
