Member of Technical Staff - Model Serving / API Backend Engineer

Black Forest Labs is seeking a Member of Technical Staff to join our team in developing and improving our API and model serving backend services. As a pioneering startup in generative image and video models, our team has developed technologies like Stable Diffusion and FLUX.1, making generative AI accessible to millions. With a team of approximately 50, we operate from our labs in Freiburg, Germany, and San Francisco, USA, building the next generation of AI infrastructure.

In this role, you will develop and maintain robust APIs for serving machine learning models at scale, ensuring high availability and reliability. You will transform research models into production-ready demos and MVPs, optimize model inference for improved performance and scalability, and implement systems for user preference data acquisition. Collaboration with machine learning researchers to rapidly prototype and deploy new models is also a key aspect of the position.

The ideal candidate will have strong proficiency in Python and its ecosystem for machine learning, data analysis, and web development. Extensive experience with RESTful API development and deployment for ML tasks, familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker and Kubernetes, and knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure are essential. A proven track record in rapid ML model prototyping using tools like Streamlit or Gradio, experience with distributed task queues, and understanding of monitoring, logging, and observability best practices for ML systems are also required.
