Research Scientist
As a Research Scientist at Upstart, you will be an integral part of the Machine Learning team, which is central to the company's mission of expanding access to affordable credit through advanced AI. This team comprises research scientists, data scientists, and machine learning engineers who develop and enhance production models across various domains, including underwriting, pricing, fraud detection, and loan servicing. Your contributions will directly influence Upstart's ability to make smarter, fairer lending decisions.
In this role, you will research and develop new machine learning models to improve prediction accuracy across multiple applications and products. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include designing, prototyping, and deploying models into production, ensuring they are robust and scalable. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as engineers and product managers, will be essential to experiment with and optimize models for better business outcomes. Additionally, you will evaluate model performance, interpret their impact on business metrics, and present actionable insights to stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in a scientific or quantitative discipline, such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or Operations Research. A minimum of two years of experience in machine learning or a related field is required, along with proficiency in Python or other programming languages. A strong understanding of statistical, probability, and machine learning theory is essential. Candidates should demonstrate full-stack expertise in the modeling process from ideation to production or have deep expertise in either statistical modeling or machine learning. Effective communication skills and a strong sense of intellectual curiosity, humility, and teamwork are also important.
