Canva is seeking an experienced Employment Counsel to join its global Employment Legal Team on an 18-month fixed-term contract, focusing primarily on matters within the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative global team, providing strategic legal advice in a rapidly growing technology company dedicated to democratizing design and empowering creativity worldwide.
The Senior Employment Counsel will be responsible for delivering strategic, commercially pragmatic advice on employment law matters across Australia and the broader APAC region. Key duties include advising on day-to-day employment issues involving both employees and contingent workers, such as performance management, terminations, investigations, and regulatory compliance. The role also involves partnering closely with teams like People, Total Rewards, and Finance to support Canva's evolving workforce model, contributing to the development and review of workplace policies and processes, and delivering training on employment-related topics. Additionally, the counsel will collaborate with the global Employment Legal Team on cross-border initiatives and shared priorities.
The ideal candidate will be admitted to practice in Australia and possess over six years of experience as a practicing employment lawyer, with in-house experience in a multinational environment being highly regarded. Strong experience in advising HR and business leaders on a broad range of employment matters is essential. The candidate should demonstrate confidence in navigating ambiguity, balancing legal risk with commercial pragmatism, and possess excellent communication skills to translate complex legal concepts into practical solutions. A high level of integrity, professionalism, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to grow are also key attributes for this role.
Canva offers a range of benefits to support employees' success both inside and outside of work. These include equity packages to share in the company's success, an inclusive parental leave policy supporting all parents and carers, an annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support wellbeing, social connection, and office setup, as well as flexible leave options that empower employees to recharge and support personal commitments.
Joining Canva means becoming part of a company with a remarkable growth trajectory and a mission to change the world, one design at a time. The company fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity, providing employees with opportunities for professional development and the chance to make a significant impact in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
