Senior Legal Counsel - Content Safety, Product & Privacy
Canva is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its Product and Privacy team in Melbourne, Australia. This role focuses on content safety, product counseling, legal strategy, and governance, particularly in the realms of AI, online safety, and platform laws. The position offers a hybrid work environment, combining remote flexibility with in-person collaboration at Canva's Melbourne campus.
In this role, the Senior Legal Counsel will identify and advise on legal issues related to online content and product safety, including youth and AI considerations, platform regulations, privacy, intellectual property, and AI legislation. They will build strong relationships with stakeholders, advising on product development, go-to-market strategies, and risk mitigation, with a particular emphasis on safety concerns. Additionally, the role involves contributing to the development and implementation of company-wide safety policies and processes, drafting and maintaining legal playbooks, and collaborating closely with various teams such as policy, IP, security, product, trust and safety, regulatory, and engineering.
Candidates should be legally qualified with an Australian or New Zealand practicing certificate and have over eight years of legal experience, including some in-house exposure. A strong understanding of online safety laws and regulations, privacy, platform, and consumer laws related to digital products and generative AI is essential. Familiarity with modern AI technology and products is also important. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, pragmatic, business-minded lawyer who can simplify compliance without compromising standards and is comfortable working with engineers and product managers in fast-paced environments.
