Canva's Video team, part of the Design Experience Supergroup, is dedicated to enabling users to create compelling visual stories through video. We develop intuitive tools and robust rendering infrastructure that facilitate seamless transitions from ideas to impactful content. This role is pivotal in driving innovation within Canva's intelligent video editing experiences.

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer on the Video Effects stream, you will design, fine-tune, and deploy models that power Canva's next-generation video effects, AI editing, and interactive experiences. Your work will bridge research and production, transforming machine learning concepts into real-time features that delight users. Responsibilities include integrating on-device AI capabilities and building scalable backend pipelines.

Key responsibilities encompass designing and deploying machine learning models for AI-powered visual effects across image and video formats. You will build robust pipelines for LoRA-based model training, post-training quantization, and inference optimization. Additionally, developing and integrating on-device machine learning capabilities for mobile runtime efficiency, scaling backend services for effect model serving, asset management, and real-time rendering are essential tasks. Prototyping novel AI effects using diffusion, computer vision, and shader-driven approaches, collaborating closely with design and engineering teams to bring creative ideas to life, and staying informed on emerging trends in generative machine learning, real-time graphics, and VFX workflows to drive innovation are also part of the role.

The ideal candidate possesses an academic or practical background in computer graphics, computer vision, or computer animation, with experience in areas such as numerical methods, geometric processing, physical simulation, character animation, generative models (GAN, VAE), or mobile image processing. Proven experience in fine-tuning and deploying computer vision models, particularly for real-time or streaming use cases, is essential. Hands-on skills with LoRA training, model post-processing (quantization, pruning), and on-device inference optimization are required. Familiarity with image and video machine learning models and their integration into visual or rendering pipelines, proficiency in backend development (e.g., Python, Go) and model-serving architectures, practical knowledge of computer graphics APIs (OpenGL/OpenGLES) and shader development (GLSL/HLSL), and full proficiency in English communications are also necessary. Experience with AI effect tools, video post-production, or multimedia machine learning use cases is a strong bonus.

This position offers the opportunity to learn to ship creative machine learning features at scale, powering real-time video editing for millions of users. You will contribute to an interdisciplinary team bridging product, AI/ML, and design, and influence Canva’s future in intelligent creative tools through your research and engineering.
