Upstart is seeking a Senior Manager of Database Engineering to lead a team responsible for the reliability, performance, and scalability of the database systems powering our AI-driven lending platform. This role involves defining the long-term vision for database engineering, ensuring operational excellence, and collaborating with product engineering, infrastructure, and data teams to establish standards and solve complex scaling challenges.

Key responsibilities include defining the roadmap for database engineering to support Upstart's growth, leading and mentoring a team of Database Engineers, and partnering with application and data engineering teams to establish standards for database design, schema governance, and query optimization. The role also involves driving initiatives to improve availability, security, and performance across all database environments, championing automation and tooling to reduce operational overhead, and acting as a thought partner to engineering leadership on database strategy and cost efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of people and team management experience, along with over 8 years in database engineering or DBA roles. Deep expertise in Postgres, including extensions, performance tuning, and replication, is essential. Experience designing and supporting high-volume OLTP systems, a strong background with AWS services (RDS, EC2, IAM, VPC, S3), and proficiency with Python or another scripting language for database automation are required. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and operations teams are also necessary.

Upstart offers a competitive compensation package, including a base salary ranging from $186,100 to $257,500, depending on geographic location and individual qualifications. Additional benefits include target bonuses, equity compensation, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, a generous 401(k) plan with company matching, and various wellness and professional development allowances.
