Senior Software Engineer (Backend, Distributed Systems)
Censys is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in backend distributed systems to enhance our data platform, known as the Internet Map. This role involves building scalable services and APIs that process vast amounts of data, providing direct value to customers and internal teams. Operating within a distributed infrastructure for Internet-wide scanning, the engineer will contribute to creating high-quality datasets and APIs that offer insights into the Internet at large.
The primary responsibilities include designing and developing large-scale, real-time streaming services and applications that leverage massive datasets to power internal APIs and external applications. The engineer will own the design and development phases of backend services and APIs, collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure the development of appropriate solutions, and utilize architectural and design expertise to build various system components such as messaging queues, databases, ingestion pipelines, caching layers, and services that run in cloud or on-premises environments.
Candidates should have over five years of experience in software engineering, particularly in writing distributed systems like data ingestion pipelines, databases, and services. Proficiency in object-oriented programming, especially in Go, is required. Experience with at least one cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP), message queue technologies (AWS Kinesis, Google Pub/Sub, Kafka, etc.), and databases (BigTable, Cloud Spanner, HBase, Cassandra, etc.) is essential. The ability to build scalable, distributed systems, write maintainable code, and effectively communicate technical concepts to other engineers and product managers is also necessary.
For high cost of living areas such as the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and the New York City metro, the expected salary range for this position is $157,000 to $187,000, plus bonus eligibility and equity. For all other locations, the expected salary range is $137,000 to $175,000, plus bonus eligibility and equity.
