Waymo, an autonomous driving technology company, is seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Privacy to join their team in Mountain View, California. This role focuses on designing and implementing global privacy systems to ensure compliance with stringent regulations, particularly the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As Waymo expands its services to European markets, this position is crucial for integrating privacy measures into their autonomous vehicle operations.
The primary responsibilities include architecting data handling systems that meet GDPR requirements, developing computer vision and machine learning pipelines to anonymize sensor data, and writing scalable code to enforce data retention policies and access controls. Collaboration with Legal, Product, and AI/ML teams is essential to translate complex regulatory texts into engineering specifications and system requirements. Additionally, conducting privacy impact assessments and threat modeling for new features, with a focus on cross-border data transfer risks and third-party vendor integration, is a key aspect of the role.
Candidates should possess a BS degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. A minimum of 3-5 years in software engineering with a focus on privacy, security, or data infrastructure is required. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java is essential. A deep understanding of GDPR and experience with large-scale data processing frameworks and cloud infrastructure are also necessary.
The expected base salary range for this full-time position is $170,000 to $216,000 USD annually. Waymo employees are eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and a generous benefits package, subject to eligibility requirements.
