Staff Software Engineer - API Platform
Canva is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its API Platform team in Melbourne, Australia. This team is dedicated to enhancing Canva's backend services, ensuring they can scale effectively to support a growing user base. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction and architecture of Canva's API platforms.
In this role, you will lead the development of the technical roadmap for API platforms, focusing on critical components of Canva's backend systems. You will become an authority in API architecture and service communication, defining best practices for software architecture, service performance, and resiliency patterns. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing complex system aspects, proposing innovative solutions to future-proof Canva's distributed cloud infrastructure, and guiding major projects to ensure effective task breakdown and team synchronization. Additionally, you will mentor other engineers, assisting in their professional development and helping them navigate technical challenges.
The ideal candidate will have over ten years of experience developing sophisticated distributed web applications on the JVM, with proficiency in Java and familiarity with other backend languages such as Scala, Python, and Typescript. Experience in planning and executing architectural changes, strong communication and teamwork skills, and a creative problem-solving approach are essential. Expertise in asynchronous or reactive programming techniques, deep knowledge of computer science fundamentals, and experience working in large distributed cloud environments (ideally AWS) are highly regarded. Familiarity with RPC frameworks like gRPC and modern networking protocols such as HTTP/2, protobuf, and WebSockets is a plus.
