Technical Artist – Video Effect

Within this team, the Video group focuses on enhancing video editing capabilities, aiming to provide seamless and high-performance experiences. The Technical Artist – Video Effect role is pivotal in merging engineering expertise with creative production to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
In this position, the Technical Artist will be responsible for designing and developing visual effects tailored for video editing, encompassing scene effects, facial effects, and post-processing pipelines. The role involves building and optimizing materials and shaders using Canva’s proprietary rendering engine and internal tools. Collaboration with engineers and designers is essential to deliver visually compelling and performant features. Additionally, the Technical Artist will utilize Digital Content Creation (DCC) tools to prototype and translate creative concepts into production-ready effects, and write scripts in languages such as Lua and JavaScript to enable dynamic visual behaviors.
The ideal candidate possesses strong experience with real-time rendering pipelines, capable of creating materials, shaders, and visual effects that balance quality and performance. Familiarity with modern rendering or game engines, such as Unreal Engine 5, and a foundational understanding of Blueprints and C++ are important. Proficiency in scripting languages like Lua or JavaScript is required to drive interactive visual behaviors. Experience in high-quality visual environments, including AAA games or interactive media, and knowledge of systems like face customization or character creation are advantageous. Exposure to Procedural Content Generation (PCG) and integration with AI-driven workflows is beneficial. Confidence in using DCC tools to prototype and translate creative concepts into production-ready assets is also desired.
