Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment
The Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment, is a key member of the legal team at SGS, a global leader in inspection, verification, testing, and certification. This role is situated within the corporate legal department and plays a pivotal role in advising management on labor and employment matters, policy development, compliance, and conflict resolution across SGS’s North American operations. The position supports the company’s mission to maintain a high standard of integrity and professionalism while navigating the complexities of employment law in a dynamic international environment.
The core responsibilities for this position include providing strategic legal counsel on labor relations, employee relations, workplace investigations, policy drafting, and employment litigation matters. The Assistant General Counsel is expected to draft, review, and negotiate a range of employment-related agreements, conduct internal investigations, guide managers on corrective actions and disciplinary matters, and lead responses to regulatory agency inquiries. The job also encompasses monitoring legal trends, assessing business risks, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations.
Successful candidates will hold a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law. They should have significant experience in labor and employment law, preferably with a mix of in-house and law firm backgrounds. Strong written and oral communication skills, an in-depth knowledge of employment laws, and a proven track record of handling complex legal matters are essential. Skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and business-oriented legal analysis are also highly valued.
