Commercial Counsel, GTM
Canva is seeking a business-minded attorney to join its Commercial Legal team as a Commercial Counsel, GTM. This role involves supporting the company's rapidly growing Enterprise and Public Sector business by reviewing and negotiating a high volume of commercial agreements across various sectors, including Enterprise, Public Sector, Higher Education, and strategic partnerships. The position is based in either Austin or San Francisco, with flexibility in work arrangements.
The primary responsibilities include drafting and negotiating commercial agreements with customers, vendors, and partners, as well as supporting and evolving Canva's contracting approach for government and public sector clients. This involves navigating procurement requirements, regulatory obligations, and government-specific contracting frameworks. Additionally, the role entails supporting partner-led and channel transactions, responding promptly to legal inquiries from various stakeholders, staying current on relevant laws and regulations, and contributing to the development of contract templates and legal resources.
Candidates should have hands-on experience reviewing and negotiating a variety of contracts in a fast-paced technology company, including experience with government and public sector SaaS transactions. A proactive approach to identifying and analyzing opportunities and risks is essential, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to simplify complex concepts. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional and internationally distributed teams, a solutions-driven attitude, and a willingness to embrace AI tools and workflows to enhance efficiency and impact.
Minimum requirements include being qualified to practice law in the U.S. and having over five years of in-house experience at a SaaS or fast-growth tech company. Preferred qualifications encompass knowledge and understanding of Canva and/or SaaS offerings, experience using contracting tools such as Ironclad and DocuSign, and demonstrated interest or experience in using AI tools in a legal or operational setting.
