Corporate Counsel (Marketing)
Duolingo is seeking a Corporate Counsel specializing in marketing to serve as a legal partner to our Marketing team. In this role, you will provide guidance on marketing and advertising initiatives across various channels, ensuring that our campaigns are both compliant and creatively bold. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to support Duolingo's mission of developing the best education in the world and making it universally available.
Your primary responsibilities will include advising on marketing campaigns, social content, creator programs, experiential activations, and press moments, helping teams meet deadlines with clear, practical guidance. You will review and negotiate marketing agreements, such as talent and influencer contracts, production statements of work, vendor master service agreements, licensing agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and promotional terms. Additionally, you will manage rights and clearances for marketing assets, advise on advertising and consumer protection laws, and maintain guardrails that enable bold yet compliant creative. Staying updated on relevant regulations and platform policies, you will conduct brief trainings for marketers and creators on disclosures, usage rights, and brand safety.
The ideal candidate will possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or international equivalent and active bar membership in good standing. You should have 4 to 8 years of relevant legal experience, including familiarity with areas such as copyright, trademark, right of publicity, advertising, and claim substantiation. Experience advising on marketing and advertising campaigns, particularly in social media, is essential. Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills across various agreements are required, along with the ability to balance risk with business goals and speed. Clear, concise communication tailored to creative and non-legal stakeholders, as well as proven cross-functional partnership and judgment in fast-moving environments, are also important. The ability to work from or relocate to Pittsburgh, PA, is necessary.
Exceptional candidates will have a strong interest in Duolingo's mission, deep familiarity with social media marketing, particularly with agencies outside the United States, experience handling marketing-related disputes, and experience with contests, sweepstakes, or promotional offers. Experience working in the music or entertainment industry and an interest in learning new areas of law related to emerging technologies are also advantageous.
Duolingo offers a competitive salary range of $153,000 to $207,000 USD, along with equity compensation and world-class benefits.
