As a Platform Engineer II at Duolingo, you will be a key member of the Compute team, responsible for enhancing the core compute platform that supports our applications. This role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability and scalability of services that cater to millions of learners worldwide.

Your primary responsibilities will include building and operating Kubernetes-based compute primitives across various regions and cloud providers. You will also focus on improving delivery pipelines by evolving GitOps and deployment patterns to facilitate safer and faster rollouts. Additionally, you will define service level objectives (SLOs), develop dashboards and alerts, write runbooks, and participate in on-call incident response to maintain platform dependability. Enabling effective self-service by creating reusable platform abstractions for product engineers is also a key aspect of this role.

The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills and experience delivering pragmatic solutions in production environments. A solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including networking, service-to-service communication, failure modes, and caching/storage concepts, is essential. Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Argo CD, or GitHub Actions, as well as infrastructure management tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, is required. Clear written and verbal communication skills, along with functional knowledge of Linux system administration and automation, are also necessary.

Exceptional candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, experience managing production infrastructure on AWS, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, or Azure, and exposure to multi-cluster or multi-region architectures. Familiarity with service mesh or zero-trust networking patterns, such as Istio mTLS, traffic management, and authorization policies, is a plus.
