Divisional Deputy City Solicitor – Civil Rights Unit
The City of Philadelphia is seeking an experienced litigator to serve as the Divisional Deputy City Solicitor in the Civil Rights Unit. This role involves managing and defending cases in both state and federal courts that arise from allegations of constitutional violations. The Civil Rights Unit represents the City and its employees, handling lawsuits that claim violations of individual constitutional rights or intentional torts. Additionally, the Unit provides counsel to various City departments on matters with potential civil rights implications.
Key responsibilities include advising and representing the City and its employees before judges and juries, presenting evidence in litigation, and conducting legal research and analysis. The role also involves supervising junior attorneys and legal assistants, reviewing and approving legal documents, and collaborating with client departments to discuss policy changes and implications. The Divisional Deputy City Solicitor will also analyze probable case outcomes and negotiate settlements as necessary.
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of litigation experience, including a minimum of three years in constitutional litigation. A law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in good standing with the Pennsylvania Bar, or eligibility for admission by reciprocity, are required. The candidate should possess excellent legal research and writing skills, superior oral advocacy abilities, and experience supervising attorneys throughout various stages of litigation.
